I hope people don't embrace genetically modified foods because of the current food crisis. They should do so based on a sound judgment. What this means is that consumers must read as much literature as possible about genetically modified foods. It's available in books, magazines and the internet. And I guarantee that if consumers stick to what scientists have so far said about genetically modified foods, they'll find that they don't pose any threat to their health or the environment. I've in mind an article like this written by an expert on agricultural issues from the respected Harvard University.

But if consumers choose to go by what the Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth say, they'll definitely not be attracted to GM foods. They'll see Monsanto, DuPont or Bayer as profiteers and not sources of a solution to the current food crisis.

So, this is the time for consumers to decided to judge for themselves if genetically modified foods are safe to them. It'd be very wrong for the world to accept genetically modified foods just because there is an acute shortage of food. What happens when the current crisis ends? People will resort to their former state of fear about genetically modified foods.
