That's a key point in American history, Anchovy; not only are corporations "viewed" as citizens, but actually have the same legal status and protection as citizens. This is the historical crossroads covered well in the documentary, <a href="http://www.thecorporation.com" target="_blank">"The Corporation."</a> If you have not seen it you should.

Nice article Andy. As a thirtysomething (gen x or whatever follows the baby boomers) I do sympathize with your position and feel sorry for the baby boomers (my parents). However, truly I feel much worse for my generation. How much money will the younger generation see of what they have paid in? Your article leads me to believe that on a percentage basis it will be much less than what the baby boomers will receive(d).

The point is the system will fail both - thus it is broken. Moreover, Social Security is a Ponzi scheme just like Madoff's. Yet it appears that we allow the government to operate such a horrible scheme as they have the ability to raise taxes and print money, which obviously Madoff could do neither.

In the end I am left wondering how to start my own government. But wait that is what America is, a government by the people, for the people, of the people. With that said I sense that one of the core issues which are creating an imbalance between rich and poor, and ripping apart the middle class, is that corporations (businesses) are viewed as citizens. As citizens they also have the freedom of speech and thus hire lobbyists to articulate their positions, views, and desires. In other words I currently believe that the money corporations spend on buying politicians is protected as freedom of speech. Since they spend way more money than we as "people" do collectively, the government hears their message better! Simply sad.

Should that issue be fixed I do believe that there will be other problems to deal with as well. Yet it will be fair fight, a balanced debate, between "people" that can respect each others humanitarian needs. In some way I see that we will have less to loose and more to gain.

Humbly,
