The Canadian markets showed signs of life for a second straight session as gold and oil plays once again caught the fancy of investors during Thursday trading.

For the tale of the tape, the TSX Exchange tacked on 1.42%, while the TSX Gold Index exploded upwards by 5.1% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, added 1.56% with believe it or not the advancing issuers beating out the decliners by a 445 to 388 margin on volume of 112 million shares traded.

Despite no new developments, it was a good day for Western Uranium (CVE:WUC). The company, which recently spun off its lithium assets into a new company, added C$0.10 to close at C$0.88.

Shares of ATAC Resources (CVE:ATC) continued to attract investors as the results to date at its wholly owned Rau property in the Keno Hill district of central Yukon suggest some size potential. ATAC ended the session up C$0.04 at C$0.44.

A formal review to identify strategic alternatives to unlock shareholder value helped EarthFirst Canada (TSE:EF) gain C$0.225 to C$0.475. The wind energy company’s 144 MW Dokie I project in British Columbia is slated for completion next year.

Sherwood Copper (CVE:SWC) tagged 4.7% copper and 1.2 grams gold per tonne over 8.5 metres in Area 118 of its Minto copper-gold mine in the Yukon. Sherwood ended the session up C$0.03 at C$4.60.

On the downside, shares of Antares Minerals (CVE:ANM) dropped C$0.29 to close at C$2.26 on over 2.6 million shares traded. The junior has been pulling some nice intercepts from its Haquira copper-molybdenum-gold project in Peru.

While Thursday marked a quiet news day, the strength of the broader markets suggest that perhaps the worse of the resource sell-off is now behind us as we head into the later part of August. We will see what Friday trading has in store.

A decent showing by the gold guys helped trim the losses on the big board but the junior bourse continued to face a barrage of selling during Tuesday trading on the Canadian markets.

For the tale of the tape, the TSX Exchange fell 0.42%, while the TSX Gold Index was the big winner by jumping 2% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, dropped 1.14% with the declining issuers beating out the advancers by a 570 to 302 margin on volume of 111 million shares traded.

It was a rough day for shareholders of Goldsource Mines (CVE:GXS) after the company reported that one hole returned 41.1 metres of coal, while another hit 6.7 metres and a third had no coal at the Border Property near Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. Drilling is now complete until after freeze up. Goldsource ended the day at C$4.50, down C$1.38.

Shares of ATAC Resources (CVE:ATC) managed to gain C$0.02 to close at C$0.34 after reporting a 78.54 metre intercept running 1.71 grams gold per tonne at its wholly owned Rau property in the Keno Hill district of central Yukon.

Gateway Gold (TSE:GTQ) and Victoria Gold (CVE:VIT) are looking to merge in a transaction that would see Victoria acquire Gateway for 0.5 Victoria share for each Gateway share. At the end of the day, Victoria would have nearly 113 million shares outstanding. Gateway ended the day up C$0.01 at C$0.18, while Victoria added C$0.02 at C$0.36.

Anatolia Minerals Development (TSE:ANO) has been granted the forestry permit for its Copler gold mine project in Turkey. The permit is the final preconstruction permit needed. Anatolia ended the session up C$0.16 at C$2.32.

A notable lack of buyers is driving to junior bourse to new multi-year lows. We will see what Wednesday trading has in store.

A strong uptick in the price of bullion failed to ignite the broader bourse as the more speculative resource stocks continued to face a lack of investor interest during Monday trading on the Canadian markets.

A strong uptick in the price of bullion failed to ignite the broader bourse as the more speculative resource stocks continued to face a lack of investor interest during Monday trading on the Canadian markets.

For the tale of the tape, the TSX Exchange added 0.20%, while the TSX Gold Index was the big winner by jumping 2.8% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, dropped 0.71% with the declining issuers beating out the advancers by a 504 to 350 margin on pathetic volume of 84 million shares traded.

Shares of Yukon-Nevada Gold (YNG) got hammered for the second time in as many weeks as the company faces a liquidity issue at its Jerritt Canyon gold mine in Nevada. On August 8 Yukon Nevada Gold suspended underground mining. The junior ended the session down C$0.15 at C$0.13.

Aquila Resources (AQA) moved higher thanks to results from its Back Forty Project in Michigan. Highlights included 14.6 grams gold and 285.8 grams silver per tonne over 2.1 metres. Aquila ended the day up C$0.01 at C$0.28.

Longview Capital Partners (LV) lost C$3.9 million or C$0.04 per share in the three-month period ended June 30, compared to a loss of C$17.1 million or C$0.16 per share in the same period of 2007. The investor in junior exploration plays held stock valued at C$72.6 million, down from C$105.6 million at the end of 2007. Longview ended the session at C$0.155, down C$0.005

A stock to watch is ATAC Resources (ATC). The junior was halted from trading pending news at C$0.32. The news is that all the holes reported to date at its wholly owned Rau property in the Keno Hill district of central Yukon have hit the goodies. The latest includes 78.54 metres grading 1.71 grams gold per tonne. The discovery drill hole returned 1.24 grams gold per tonne over 68.69 metres.

Most of the junior companies appear to be keeping their heads down on the news front these days because even good results are getting treated with distaste. This is often the sign of a bottom but we will see what Tuesday trading has in store.

The Canadian markets managed a modest recovery from Tuesday’s massive sell off as select investors went bargain hunting during Wednesday trading.

For the tail of the tape; the TSX Exchange gained 1.63%, while the TSX Gold Index (TSE:XGD) rallied 2.9% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, tacked on 0.28% with the declining issuers beating out the advancers by a 462 to 362 margin on volume of 101 million shares traded.

The big news of the day did not include any Canadian listed stocks as mining giant Xstrata (LON:XTA) made a $10 billion cash offer for Lonmin (LON:LMI), the world’s third largest platinum producer. Xstrata tabled a $33 per share bid that Lonmin says is opportunistic despite its 42%…

Xstrata tabled a $33 per share bid that Lonmin says is opportunistic despite its 42% premium over Tuesday’s closing price.

Back at home, Atac Resources (CVE:ATC) appears to have tagged at its wholly owned Rau property in the central Yukon. The discovery hole returned 1.24 grams gold per tonne over 68.69 metres. The company describes the mineralization as stratabound in limestone/dolomites with assays pending for nine nearby drill holes that cut similar thicknesses of the same type of mineralization. Atac ended the session up C$0.125, at C$0.375.

Axmin (CVE:AXM) added C$0.015 to close at C$0.23 after the junior reported a 46.7 metre intercept running 3.9 grams gold per tonne at its Komahun project in Sierra Leone.

It was a good day for shareholders of Hathor Exploration (CVE:HAT) despite no new developments at its 90% owned Roughrider uranium zone in the prolific Athabasca basin of Saskatchewan. Hathor ended the session up C$0.51 to a new high of C$3.72.

Consolidation is continuing and the weakness in the resource market means only the strong will survive. We will see what Thursday trading has in store.
