Oil prices could fall as low as $20 a barrel in early 2009, says Jason Simpkins. But don’t expect these low prices to last long. Dwindling investment will prompt a longer-term supply crunch, which will send crude to new record highs. Jason gives seven ways to profit from this coming spike.

Crude looks like it is entering its own type of recession this year, with the International Energy Agency predicting a fall in oil consumption for the first time in 25 years. But David Newman still thinks there are huge profits to be had in the oil industry. He recommends an Oil & Gas ETF (NYSE:IEO) and Oil Services ETF (NYSE:OIH), using a ‘protective put strategy’ to cover against downside risk.

Come Wednesday morning – after the presidential election tomorrow (Tuesday) – the United States will have a new commander-in-chief. The president-elect will face some significant challenges: A weak economy (okay, a recession, given last week’s gross domestic product (GDP) report, which confirmed just how dire the country’s economic situation had become).

New Home Sales for September are announced today and this will sound like a broken record, but they are expected to disappoint. In the face of the frozen credit markets, I guess a drop of only 2000 units could be viewed as a small victory.

GDP growth data comes out this week (Thursday). William Patalon III says confirmation that a recession is underway should help the stock market find a bottom. In the meantime, William says investors should follow two simple rules to survive and prosper in this market. 1) Don’t panic sell. 2) Buy undervalued stocks with long-term potential.

The rules of the global oil games are changing, says Keith Fitz-Gerald. And China — not the US — is leading the way. China doesn’t worry about the political leanings or dubious human rights of its energy suppliers. It needs a steady supply of oil to fuel its economic boom…and it will do what it takes to get it.

Back in July, Money Map Report editor Horacio Marquez recommended Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX). William Patalon III says the company is still a good buy. It is expected to post strong 3Q results at the end of the month, but its share price has been discounted to bargain levels by market panic.

The economic calendar this week isn’t particularly exciting, but coming off the pain inflicted on the markets last week, that could be a good thing. The market will have its hands full with earnings season starting up again, so a full week of reports could have been dangerous.

Even an agreement on the draft of the $700 billion bailout bill couldn’t raise US stocks today. The Dow (DJI) sank over 300 points in the first hour of trading today.
Money Map editor Horacio Marquez says the financial meltdown is dragging down shares of even the strongest companies; but short-term volatility aside, these firms will rebound sharply. This means plenty of contrarian bargains.
Horacio says oil-and-gas company Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) is a good example. It’s expanding production in the Canadian tar sands. And a strong cash flow and low leverage ratios make for a healthy balance sheet.
