The World Bank estimates that the global economy will likely shrink for the first time since World War II – at least five percentage points below potential – and emerging markets will suffer the hardest hits with severe long-term implications.

In the currency market, the dollar edged lower against the euro. Late Monday, the euro was trading at $1.275 vs. $1.2712 on Friday. China’s state-run news agency, Xinhua, said that the government’s stimulus program will “will loosen credit conditions, cut taxes and embark on a massive infrastructure spending program in a wide-ranging effort to offset adverse global economic conditions by boosting domestic demand.”

You and I are riding China’s economic tiger. The whole Western world is. It has been a pleasant rise so far. We have the electronic gadgets and cheap toys to prove it. “Made in China” is everywhere. But this tiger is a paper tiger – paper money.
