Gold rose on Thursday as the dollar fell versus a basket of currencies, with rebounding stock markets and U.S. jobless figures showing a decline in continuing claims boosting appetite for assets seen as higher risk.

Someone sure was excited about Silver Wheaton Corp (NYSE: SLW) Tuesday morning.  It gapped up 2% and kept rising from there.

Gold was little changed in Europe on Monday, consolidating after last week’s more than 3 percent rise, with strong demand for physical investment products such as gold-backed exchange-traded funds supporting prices.

Gold may not be the sexiest or most thrilling investment out there. But we don’t invest to entertain ourselves. When the markets go haywire, you need to take action to protect what you have earned.

The spot price of gold has fallen more than 20% from its all-time high, reached in March of 2008. But if you think that means demand has declined, think again.
