Gold was yet again the big winner, with investors bailing out of the broader bourse during Wednesday trading on the Canadian markets. For the tale of the tape, the TSX Exchange plunged 2.42%, while the TSX Gold Index added another 0.8% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, fell 0.36%, with the decliners swamping the advancers by a 460 to 336 margin on 137 million shares traded.

It was a roller coaster ride for investors on the Canadian Markets during Wednesday trading. For the tale of the tape, the TSX Exchange rallied 2.97%, while the TSX Gold Index popped another 2.1% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, fell 0.6% with the declining issuers edging out the advancers by a 337 to 310 margin on 106 million shares traded.

The gold market was obviously open in the U.S. on Martin Luther King Day. But not much happened except a continuation of the decline that began at 11:00 a.m. in London on Monday…which lasted until 3:00 a.m. New York time yesterday…shortly before London opened on Tuesday morning. This decline managed to shave about $18 off the gold price during that period of time.

The Canadian Markets gained momentum during Thursday trading as investors bought equities ahead of the employment numbers for the United States set to come out on Friday. For the tale of the tape, the TSX Exchange tacked on 1.10%, while the TSX Gold Index added 4.7% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, gained 1.26% with the advancing issuers edging out the decliners by a 388 to 335 margin on volume of 134 million shares traded.

Do you remember the 1970 Academy Award-winning movie Patton, starring George C. Scott? In the beginning of the movie, Scott — playing the iconic American Gen. George S. Crude oil has dropped form its July 11 record of $147 to just over $113 a barrel. Gold, meanwhile, has come off its March high of $1,030.80 to slip back below $800 an ounce.
Many in the mainstream press are calling an end to the “commodities bubble.” But oil and energy expert Byron King warns investors against betting against cheap oil and gold.

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke is caught between a rock and a hard place right now. Sure, he would prefer that you focus on “core inflation,” since it excludes sharply rising food and oil prices. But we all have to eat and we all consume energy.
