The dollar edged up against the euro and yen on Monday in extremely thin trade as Wall Street surrendered earlier gains and traders repositioned themselves ahead of U.S. consumer and housing data due this week.

Oil fell more than a dollar to below $44 on Thursday as a record drop in euro zone economic performance heightened expectations that fuel consumption would shrink further.

In the currency market, the dollar moved higher again vs. the euro. Late Monday, the euro was trading at $1.2641 vs. $1.2751 on Friday. “There is still strong underlying demand for the U.S. dollar,” said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman.
