The stock market is due a bounce after the election, regardless of who wins. But after that, the voter’s choice will have a big impact on industry winners and losers. Rick Pendergraft says biotech and alternative energy stocks should get a lift under Obama, while defense and oil will benefit from a McCain victory.

How will the stock markets respond to a new US president? Martin Delholm says the impact will be less than some people expect. But some sectors will benefit from a regime change. With Obama the clear favourite to win, Martin recommends three clean energy stocks likely to gain from new subsidies.

Falling oil prices have hurt a lot of investors, even some of the nation’s so-called energy experts. One of the nation’s oil heroes, T. Boone Pickens, has lost billions in 2008.
I am not sure this country should follow the advice of a man that has lost over $2 billion so far this year. But then again, some of the nation’s most powerful men have lost far more than that in just the past few weeks.
If you spend any time watching your living room television set, you have seen T. Boone Pickens discussing his proposed energy plan. The 80-year old has spent over $58 million of his own money to tell the nation it must lose its dependence on foreign oil.
What…

Remember the blackout that crippled New York in 2003? Byron King says this could be a common occurrence across the US within five years. He says the power industry is “paralyzed by the uncertainty of lopsided risks”. Soon costs are going to rise, and reliability will fall. Byron says investors in new power companies should make big profits.

The US consumer is on life support. Retail sales cratered in September, and consumer confidence indexes are at rock bottom. Uncle Sam is gearing up for a new New Deal to resuscitate the patient, says Justice Litle. It will focus on alternative energy projects… and could create the next big bubble.

It’s been a bumpy ride for solar stocks recently.
The industry received a boost when clean energy tax credits were added to the $700 bailout bill to help its passage from Congress. But fears of falling demand and oversupply have weighed on solar stocks. The Claymore/MAC Global Solar Index ETF (NYSE:TAN) fell 35% in the first eight trading days of October.
William Patalon III, however, says new mapping technology and advances that have made solar power more eco-friendly will boost solar stocks in the long run.

Solar energy was given a boost last week after $18 billion in tax credits for clean energy were tacked on to the bailout bill to ease its passage through Congress.
Since then, however, concerns of oversupply have whacked solar stocks. This prompted Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) to downgrade several solar companies to a “sell”.
J. Cristoph Amberger says the current financial crisis will hurt investment in solar power. He recommends investors sell their positions while they still can.

The crisis on Wall Street has effectively stopped funding for alternative energy projects.
But an even bigger problem has been the coming expiration of energy tax credits for the manufacturing, production and use of alternative energy systems and devices at the end of 2008. This situation has now changed with the $18 billion Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008.
David Fessler at Investment U says three alternative-energy ETFs should see “big moves” in the remainder of 2008 and in 2009 on the back of the bill.

OPEC said today it would cut output by more than 500,000 barrels of oil a day by sticking closer to production quotas. OPEC is trying to stop the slide in oil prices. The cartel doesn’t want oil prices too high, either, says Dan Denning. That would force its clients to start looking in earnest for cheaper alternative and (whisper it) more environmentally friendly energy sources.

Taipan Publishing’s Sara Nunnally thinks we are seeing the first wave of renewable energy investments in Latin America. The region is one of the fastest growing in today’s global economy, and countries like Chile are turning to wind and solar power to boost local energy capacity. However, ongoing political and instability in the region makes any new venture risky, so Sara recommends sticking to established European firms for solid profit opportunities…
