It is high time for our political leaders to make some key decisions. And that translates into large uncertainties for investors that have held the market in a range and with low volume. We do not know whether “Cap and Trade” legislation will pass the Senate and we do not know whether and any healthcare bill will pass through Congress, or what that bill might entail. And these two issues are paramount for the future of America.

The World Bank yesterday (Monday) lowered its growth forecast for the global economy and warned about a long and painful recovery in developed economies, underscoring the recent supposition by many analysts that a three-month rally in U.S. stocks has been overdone.

Employers cut 539,000 jobs in April, the lowest total in six months, but the Labor Department said the unemployment rate still soared to 8.9%, from 8.5% in March. While some analysts viewed the latest report as a sign of a nascent economic recovery, the unemployment numbers are almost certain to head higher before the recession is declared over.
